Abel Albino, the doctor who wants to end child malnutrition

"If we feed the boys well, in twenty years we are power"
Pediatrician Abel Albino says he has the recipe to "break child malnutrition in Argentina". He runs 86 containment centers and asks for help to build another 2,000 in five years.

Twenty years ago he began to develop a project to end the ravages of hunger. Today its foundation, Conin, has two hospitals, training and treatment centers and 35 offices in different parts of the country. Its objective: "To end the war of the man against the man and to initiate the war of the man against the hunger"
He is an optimist. Ensures that when you are a pediatrician, like him, it is necessary to smile. Many people look at him in amazement, but he is convinced that it is possible to end child malnutrition and intends to expand the path that began more than 20 years ago.

Abel Albino is a doctor in medicine, pediatrician, founder and president of Conin in Argentina, a cooperator for child nutrition, which he developed in our country in the image and likeness of the one created in Chile by the doctor Fernando Mönckeberg. In 1993, he decided to face in his city, Mendoza, a project with an uncertain destiny, but built on the conviction that it was necessary "to end the war of the man against the man, and to initiate the war of the man against the hunger".

With this objective, the organization works on three axes: teaching, with training workshops for the family; Assistance, from programs that aim to meet the needs of the beneficiaries and that promote the effort of the family along with that of the institution, "so as not to fall into welfare, which generates dependence, lack of self-esteem and, More poverty "and, finally, research on poverty and malnutrition, to quantify the impact of the implemented strategies.

Since its creation, almost 20 years ago, at the request of several NGOs that wanted to join the project, Conin generated 35 centers throughout the country (the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, Chaco , Tucuman, Santiago del Estero, Salta and Córdoba), two in Paraguay, one in Peru and one in Gambia. With the advice of the foundation, there are now twelve centers in formation, which replicate the model of the two originals.

"We have the first malnutrition prevention center in the world and it is the one we are replicating throughout the country." From our hospital in Mendoza, where prevention and treatment is done, 900 malnourished children have been recovered , With zero mortality. We have attended more than 10,000 children and today we serve 2,500 children at home and abroad. "

The network was woven from "solidarity franchises." The center, in the Federal Capital (the great expansion that had led to move offices to the center of Buenos Aires), training, advising, surveying and monitoring the rest of the headquarters headed by NGOs, which "self-manage and self-help." Some 363 professionals provide services - among pediatricians, social workers, specialists in early care and nutritionists - 62% of whom are rented and the rest voluntary.

Albino points out that several community leaders show "an awareness" and collaborate with the foundation, such as Jesús María (Córdoba), Tigre, Mar del Plata, Vicente López and San Isidro. "They help us because we are not against anyone," he emphasizes, and comments that the Ministry of Labor pays the salaries of some nurses, and the Social Action, for its part, provides several food. In addition to the NGOs and state institutions that collaborate financially with the foundation, there is another source of income, something like a "club of friends" who collaborate with what they can every month through www.conin.org.ar .

"What if they offered me charges?" He asks, laughing. "I'm a technician and I'll work from this place around the country."

Conin's work received several local and international awards: the Ashoka Fellow (United States, 1994), perhaps the one that surprised him the most because "he had done almost nothing at the time and trusted"; The Konex, which recognized merit as a social development entity in 2008 and the Ivy Foundation's Humanitarian Prize, the same year, among others. But what do these awards mean? "We all need love and recognition and the awards tell us that we are doing well," he says with satisfaction.
Exploring the origins

His family is of pure Mendoza strain, although, due to the work of his father, he was born in Morón, on November 28, 1946.

When asked if he can detect in his youth some concern about the issues that concern him today, he says without hesitation: "I come from a family of solidarity. The Albino, Portuguese prisoners of war who fought in the conflict for the Colonia of Sacramento [Uruguay] took them to Mendoza, General San Martin, the Albino gave everything they had because they loved their cause, their passion and their sensitivity. "I descended from those Albino, who loved this country. We want these stones and these willows, because this country has given us everything. "So I want this because it is the country, which comes not from silver but from pater: it is the place where the parents are buried.

He studied medicine at the University of Tucumán. "His motto says: Pedes in Terra Ad Sidera Visus, with his feet on the ground and looking at the stars, I think a lot has been given," he concludes.

Once received, in 1972, traveled to Chile to do a specialization in pediatrics. There he met Dr. Fernando Mönckeberg, who, he says, seemed to him a man of unusual intelligence. "I remember telling my wife," I know one of the most intelligent men in the world, "and she replied," And I know one of the most exaggerated, "she laughs. Knew and realized that he was right. "

Mönckeberg was an enormous influence for the young Albino. "I was speaking 40 years ago that I was going to break malnutrition in Chile. It seemed like a dream, but it was real." How to check it? "Well, several Conin centers were closed: of the 36 that they had, there were 12, which are to serve secondary malnourished." Not that the other centers were closed for lack of budget, but were so successful that they were no longer needed. He explains that there are always secondary malnourished children: "If we open a malnourished secondary hospital in London, we fill it up because there are primary malnourished children, who are the ones who lack food, and secondary, who are the children who have a background disease. Children of an engineer, live in Palermo and be malnourished, because they lack a kidney or have a genetic disease. "

He treasured the concepts of that teacher: "No development is possible when we have armies of mentally weak children for malnutrition. We must preserve the brain and then educate it," repeats the phrase three times, as a fundamental confirmation. "The main wealth of a country is its human capital. And if that human capital is damaged, that country has no future."

When he completed his specialization in Chile, he returned and obtained a doctorate in medicine at the Universidad de Cuyo in 1977. Years later, in 1992, a professor at the University of Navarra, a specialist in molecular biology, visited Mendoza. lessons. When he arrived in Europe, he felt the impact of "seeing those countries so small and so powerful and I kept thinking about ours, one of the richest in the world, so impoverished." He was no longer happy in the Old Continent and decided to return to the country to deal with the mental weakness generated by hunger. Two examples guided him: Mother Teresa of Calcutta and John Paul II: they spoke of "sacrifice" and that we had to "deal with the poorest." "With their word, I closed everything."

The revolution is in women

Again in Mendoza, he organized a course that invited Mönckeberg and asked him to teach him about malnutrition and to help him open a center. Remember that his teacher told him: "You do not know how happy you are going to be." And he recognizes: "We found it more than interesting that they proposed to be happy. If you do good and have a good time, it is a business round."

The beginning was not easy and he had to give up his work in the hospital to be able to take care of the new project. He was without social work, without salary and even mortgaged his house. "A lot of people thought I was crazy, but a lot helped me. It's that if you generate trust, people are supportive," he reflects. At present, he continues to attend his practice and lives on that.

He is proud of his five daughters: María Cecilia (29), María José (27), María Julia, (26), María Pilar (24) and María Luisa (21), and remembers his wife, Cecilia Barrio, 11 years for a stroke. "While I was in the hospital, she said to me," Whatever happens, do not break, Abel, I will go ahead, what you do is very beautiful and we have always been very proud. "And without knowing it, it was going to be our last conversation. Left a mandate. "

Women, finally, are a key part of their entire project. The revolution is in them, because it is they who are with the children, educate them, feed them. And the truth is that, for Conin, "the main health agent are mothers, they are the custodians of the message."

How? What is the formula?

If the Government accompanies us and puts sewers, there are no parasites; And if we have running water, there is no gastroenterocolitis; And if we have hot water and electric light, it improves hygiene. And if the Government allows us to have each child receive from the moment of his birth onwards a box of milk per month, and each pregnant and nursing woman has four boxes of milk per month, we leave like an arrow. If we preserve the brain, then we educate, and simultaneously improve the infrastructure of the home, we will be power in 20 years, I sign and I put the seal.

NUNCA DEJES...

Never let the bitterness of the bitter
Contaminate your spirit.
Do not let those who think they own the rules
Tell you how to live your life.
Do not let the smart guys convince you
That the only truth is only theirs.
Nor do you believe those who mock you,
When you decide to open up your game.
Do not believe those who accuse you of being crazy
And that you go against the world
Because life has proven long ago
That what most people do is what they have
To so much life on earth dying
Do not let anyone
Tell you how to feel or what to do.
In the end
If someone takes care of you and not of yourself
It is because he is still asleep and has not understood
That everything we do not like on the outside
You must start by changing from IN.
